Celebrate Love! Story Contest: Enter By February 7th!

OpheliaWe'd like to remind you all that just a couple of days remain to submit your "Celebrate Love!" story of rescue.  We have some wonderful stories in the queue so far, including For the Love of Ophelia, by Jennifer.  Ophelia is a lovable elderly dog that Jennifer's family fostered for Boudreaux's Animal Rescue Krewe (BARK).

Any little improvement was a great celebration in our house and we made sure Ophelia knew that she was loved and special.  After a trip to the vet we got some special shampoo and a mostly clean bill of health.  She had a heart murmur and was at least 13 years old.

Click here to enjoy the rest of the story, and then enter your own!

The story prize, given to the shelter represented by the winning story, is a $1,000 grant to help animals.   Don't forget, to enter, you'll need a Shelter Challenge account, and to select a shelter to support.  Be sure to get your story in before Friday, February 7th, when 10 finalists will be chosen.  Then voting will begin on Saturday, February 8th - the perfect way to kick off the week of Valentine's Day.

Congratulations to the prize winners for the fourth week of the first 2014 Shelter Challenge!

Emma

Emma:

No rescue would take her. "A Pit Bull with a skin condition is not considered an adoptable pet." While she quickly became a staff and volunteer favorite, and while many other dogs were adopted, Emma was not...

Evan

Evan:

When I shower, he waits on the edge of the tub. Sometimes, I look down and there he is, soaked to the bone. He has an obsession with a turquoise shoe string. He carries it, growling as he struts through the house...

Beau

Beautiful Beau:

Our beautiful Beau is always happy and full of joy! He loves to snuggle on the couch with us and watch a good movie. Beau is a rescue dog that we adopted. He was found living in an abandoned home with other dogs...

Aww-liver

Aww-liver:

Renken and his raggedy fur didn't seem to get anyone's attention. My husband immediately called him Oliver because the kitten's white-tipped toes and soot-grey flanks reminded him of Oliver Twist. So, here is Oliver!

Carson

Carson:

He loves to eat, chew his treats, and go for walks. He is madly in love with Raindance, one of our female dogs. He pretty much runs the show! Carson is a great example of how almost no animal is a hopeless case...

Enrique Furglesias

Enrique Furglesias:

I knew they were meant to be. We wanted to give him an epic name, so we came up with Enrique Furglesias (we call him Ricky) and brought him home where he spent a good two weeks hiding underneath our bathroom sink...

Baby Girl

Baby Girl:

A little girl who volunteers at our shelter, 8 year old Anna Earl, took interest in Baby Girl immediately. She was concerned about her sadness, and her adoptability. So Anna began visiting Baby Girl every day...

She

Greatness:

When I came across a picture of a cow-printed kitten with enormous ears, I was too smitten to turn away. I went to the shelter, also trying to be fair and view others. No matter what, I kept coming back to her...

Simon

Simon:

Simon was a dog SHARE pulled from Miami Dade shelter. He had been living on the streets for years. He finally learned what it was like not only to be loved but to finally be able to offer his love too...

Granny

Granny:

I often wondered how an old blind cat could get so far out into the desert, and how long she had survived with coyotes all around her. Granny taught my family how important it is to not look the other way...

Weekly Winner, Exciting Stories

Aww-liver by DarleneIn an exciting start to the 2014 Celebrations Shelter Challenge, we've seen amazing work by shelters getting the word out to vote every day, fantastic stories shared in the Celebrate Joy story contest, and shelter names old and new moving up and down in the rankings.

We'd like to congratulate Langley Animal Protection Society, in Aldergrove, BC, Canada on being the first Weekly Winner and Recruiter Winner of 2014!  In this new year, all registered shelters are eligible for all prizes, and Langley Animal Protection Society and all of their amazing supporters have proven that communication is the key to success.

There are just two days left to submit your story in the Celebrate Joy story contest, making your shelter eligible for the $1,000 grant prize!  Please remember that stories that include graphic descriptions or images of suffering, neglect, pain, or violence will not be considered, and may be removed entirely.  We're looking for stories that inspire, share joy, and that showcase the wonderful relationships that rescuing animals can build and nurture.  Sign in and share your story today.  Finalist selection will occur on Friday, January 17, and voting will begin the next day.

Good luck, everyone!

The Next Shelter Challenge Starts January 6, 2014!

Welcome to 2014! Voting Starts January 6th!

GreaterGood, The Animal Rescue Site, and GreaterGood.org are excited to ring in 2014 with the new 2014 Celebrations Shelter Challenge.  We’ll be giving away 244 prizes, worth a total of more than $100,000, including monetary grants, vaccinations, and pet beds, to eligible shelters in the U.S. and around the world.

In addition to voting every day, you can support your shelter in a number of ways.  Recruiting more people to vote can really make a huge difference in how far your shelter can go up in the ranks, and there are some great recruiting prizes available for shelters.  Simply sharing the contest through Facebook and email also makes a pretty big difference.  Shelters may have a tough time getting the word out on their own — this is an area where your help not only benefits your shelter in the Shelter Challenge, but also increases awareness in the community.

We will also feature four special rescue story contests during this Shelter Challenge.  Share your favorite rescue story, and if it is selected as a finalist, your shelter could win a $1,000 grant!   Each story contest will have a theme.  Remember to keep your entry positive, and take the time to let your photo load all the way before saving.

Mother Dog Saved With Challenge Grant

Wynne Friend of Animals has been a frequent winner since they took first place in Arkansas in 2008. Since then, they’ve collected more than $10,000 in grants due to their loyal voters.

Most recently, they received a $500 runner-up prize for the muddy photo of Dewey (adopted from the shelter). The picture had been submitted by a fan for the Winter 2013 Shelter Challenge Happiest Photo contest.

"We received our monies today and it could not have come at a better time,” e-mailed Kathy Norris on Dec. 10.  "Last week, a pregnant dog was dropped at our facility with a horrible infection in her left front leg.  She has since given birth to nine puppies, three of which died in birth.  Her leg is so infected that it has to be amputated. This check will be used today for her surgery."

Since 2008, more than 400 shelters and animal rescue organizations in the United States, Canada, and elsewhere have received more than $1.4 million in Shelter Challenge grants. Funding for Shelter Challenge grants comes from The Animal Rescue Site. BARK Shocked By First Time Win

The Summer 2013 Shelter Challenge saw many first time winners including Boudreaux's Animal Rescue Krewe (BARK).

"When we found out we came in First Place Winner for the state of Louisiana, we were all so shocked and excited.  I honestly could not believe it at first," wrote Jillian Donaghey.

The rescue group had recently held a raffle to pay off a $1,022.18 veterinarian bill for the heartworm supplies.  "Then we received this grant which allowed us to use our raffle money on spays and neuters," said Donaghey. "Thank you so much for this grant money! It was an early Christmas present for all of us at BARK especially the eighteen dogs that were heartworm treated."

Among the dogs treated was Barney (shown here), who was adopted during the procedure. "His family met and fell in love with him right before he started his treatment.  They brought him home for a couple of days and then back to BARK for his Immiticide injections.  For the month he was with us, they would come and walk him and bring him special treats.  Really heartwarming and it definitely kept his spirits up during the treatment," Donaghey said.

Since 2008, more than 400 shelters and animal rescue organizations in the United States, Canada, and elsewhere have received more than $1.4 million in Shelter Challenge grants. Not every Shelter Challenge winner cares for dogs and cats. Many “specialty” rescue groups have participated over the years and used their grants to care for ferrets, rabbits, hedgehogs, potbelly pigs, parrots, horses, and ponies, among others.

Pipsqueak Paddocks Miniature Horse Haven Society in British Columbia won their first Shelter Challenge grant in 2013.

“The Shelter Challenge grant came along at just the right time. In addition to our regular costs of caring for an average of a dozen miniature horses at a time, we had a mini with a serious issue that carried extra veterinary costs,” said Rebecca Sawatzky.

Echo, pictured here, needed treatment for a sinus infection when he arrived at Pipsqueak. “He was valiant throughout and this has given him his best shot at a full recovery,” Sawatzky reported.

Since 2008, more than 400 shelters and animal rescue organizations in the United States, Canada, and elsewhere have received more than $1.4 million in Shelter Challenge grants. Funding for Shelter Challenge grants comes from The Animal Rescue Site. The distribution of grants and the collection of reports from winners is done by the Petfinder Foundation under the oversight of GreaterGood.org.

Ten Dogs Spayed With One Grant

Natalie's Second Chance Dog Shelter in Indiana takes in dogs and puppies from organizations who cannot afford to keep them until an adoptive family can be found as well as owner surrenders.

A first time winner in the Summer 2013 Shelter Challenge, they used their $1,000 Recruiter grant to spay/neuter ten dogs, including this happy pair.

“The Shelter Challenge grant allowed us to take in more dogs and puppies that were in need of care,” wrote Christina Reece. “We spay and neuter all pets prior to adoption.”

Mocha Gets A Second Chance In Canada

Boston Terrier Rescue Canada picked up their first regional award at the beginning of 2013 and came back in the Summer 2013 Shelter Challenge to win a story contest grant of $1,000 US.

The second grant enabled the Ontario rescue group to provide extensive care for Mocha (shown here).

"Mocha came into our care as a rescued puppy mill dog. She did require extensive vetting and patella surgery. We were able to show her love, kindness and support in a foster home and eventually we were able to guide her towards her forever home," wrote Margot Arsenault . "Mocha is doing very well and thriving with her new family. Thank you so much."
